Score a Spot on the Academic Stage
May 23, 2024How to Get on the Program at National Meetings
One of the most powerful ways to build a national reputation, amplify your niche, and establish yourself as an authority is by securing a spot on the program at major conferences and meetings within your field. If you're already being invited to present, Congratulations! This is a clear indicator that your consistent focus and passion for your area of interest are paying dividends.
If you're not yet on the program, don't be discouraged.
There are steps that you can take to actively pursue these valuable opportunities:
1. Make Sure You Are Consistent: The best way to get on the program, especially for panels or as an invited speaker, is if it is clear to others what your area of focus it. So make sure to use one word or phrase in all your work to make it clear who you are. If you want our Focusing Your Area of Expertise Checklist, email us at [email protected] with the subject MEETING.
2. Stay Organized: Maintaining a detailed calendar of submission deadlines for major conferences is crucial. Set reminders and block off time well in advance to ensure your proposals are polished and submitted on time. I like to keep this posted on my bulletin board to keep these deadlines in my mind as I plan timelines for my research project. And i set reminders in my calendar a month ahead of time to make sure the abstract is ready to go.
3. Connect with Program Committees: Introduce yourself to these influential members and express enthusiasm about the meeting or conference. I recommend that you offer suggestions for future programming related to your niche if there is an opportunity. Remember, the members of the committee often need and appreciate recommendations for topics and speakers.
4. Don't Be Shy: It is also reasonable to directly ask about the process for being considered as a presenter. This is especially important for meetings where most of the speakers are included by invitation only. It may also be useful to get on the program committee which will give you a great idea of what a good and a bad abstract look like. It also shows your commitment to the organization and makes it more likely that you will be included in the program in the future. It is also smart to seek guidance on submitting abstracts, proposals, or speaking applications that align with committee members areas of focus.
5. Submit a Panel or Course: Another strategy to increase your chances of being on the program is to propose an entire panel, course, or session centered around your area of expertise. As the moderator, you have the opportunity to curate the content and handpick a roster of esteemed panelists – making it an easy "yes" for the committee.
6. Leverage Your Network: When building your panel, invite senior experts in your niche to participate. Their involvement adds credibility and allows you to forge valuable connections. Make this the easiest panel your senior colleagues have ever been on…. Do this by creating the slides or bringing your questions and cases forward so that all they have to do is show up and share their expertise. These are the panels and courses that I enjoy participating in the most!
By proactively pursuing these speaking opportunities, you'll gain invaluable visibility and reinforce your reputation as a go-to expert within your specialized area. Each engagement allows you to share your knowledge, inspire colleagues, and leave a mark on your field.
